Having not played a league game since the end of November Charlbury U16 girls finally completed their fixtures. Needing a point away from home at Hinksey Girls to top the table Charlbury opened the scoring in the first half with a fine 20 yard effort from leading goalscorer Ruby Colleton after excellent build up play from Tiye and Gaby
Charlbury dominated play on a very heavy wet pitch with stand in goalkeeper Sophia having very little to do. Several chances went begging with Charlbury falling to kill off Hinksey, especially from the excellent corners of Emily. In a very competitive game no inch was given by both teams with skipper Abbie often showing the battling qualities of the Charlbury girls. A tense final five minutes was the order of the day after Charlbury conceded a sloppy goal late on but Charlbury’s back three of Nayah, Ella and Georgia stood firm and the game petered out in a 1-1 draw.
All the girls put in 100% effort and excellent performances on a poor playing surface and to top the league at this stage is a fine reward for all their dedication and commitment to training and playing, especially some of the monsoon conditions that they have encountered in their Monday night training slot!!
Charlbury Girls now take their points and leading position into a new league of the top 6 teams but with the suspension of the OMGFL due to Covid-19 until early April maybe they might be crowned champions without kicking another ball ???
